Leadership

TEGacademy Machine learning

Effective leadership begins with clarity, confidence, and behaviour, and we have designed Leadership Essentials to give new and emerging leaders exactly that.

Whether you have just stepped into a supervisory role, are leading a small project team, or are preparing for your first formal management post, this workshop gives you the practical tools to guide others with integrity and impact. Research consistently shows that good line management has a direct link to performance, wellbeing, and engagement at work, especially in today’s complex organisations.

What Leadership Essentials is about

In this workshop, we focus on the everyday situations that make or break a leader’s credibility, things like how you set expectations, how you follow through, how you handle tension in a meeting, and how you support different personalities under pressure.

By the end of the programme, you will have a clear picture of the leader you want to be, and a toolkit of behaviours you can start using immediately with your team.

We will look at:

Understanding leadership behaviours

We help you unpack what people really need from a leader, from role-modelling and emotional intelligence to psychological safety and accountability. Research from Harvard and others shows that teams perform better when people feel safe to speak up and learn from mistakes, and that starts with leadership behaviour.

Setting expectations and following through

Together we explore how to give direction without micromanaging, how to agree clear standards of performance and behaviour, and how to hold fair, honest conversations when things slip.

Communicating with purpose and clarity

We show you how to structure your messages so people understand the “why” as well as the “what”, how to adapt your style for different audiences, and how to listen in a way that builds trust. New managers often say this is where they feel most exposed, so we practise in a supportive, no-blame environment.

Handling conflict constructively

Conflict is not a sign of failure, it is a normal part of working life. We work through real scenarios, helping you distinguish between healthy challenge and unhelpful friction, and giving you practical language to defuse situations while still addressing the real issue.

Motivating and supporting different personalities

We introduce simple, evidence-based ideas from motivation and emotional intelligence, and you apply them to people you actually work with. The goal is not to turn you into a psychologist, it is to help you notice what different people need from you so they can perform at their best.

Leading under pressure

When deadlines collide, when your inbox is overflowing, when your team feels stretched, that is when leadership really shows. We look at how to stay calm and credible, how to prioritise, and how to communicate honestly without spreading panic.

This session is ideal for new managers, supervisors, team leaders, and individuals preparing for leadership roles, and it aligns closely with the core skills professional bodies highlight for first-time managers.

Two-day Leadership Essentials + simulation leadership game

The two-day version includes everything in the one-day workshop, and adds a powerful, hands-on element, our simulation leadership game. Over the second day, you and your colleagues step into the leadership team of a fictional but realistic organisation. Together you make decisions about operations, customers, people, and finances, then see the impact of those choices play out in real time.

During the simulation you will:

  • Experience what it feels like to run a business, not just a task list
  • Balance short-term pressure with long-term strategy
  • Allocate resources, respond to unexpected setbacks, and manage risk
  • Practise influencing peers, not just direct reports
  • See directly how leadership behaviours affect performance, morale, and results

Business simulations are widely used in leadership development because they create a safe space to experiment with decisions, behaviours, and consequences without risking real-world damage, while still feeling urgent and engaging.

We build structured debriefs into each round of the game, connecting what happened in the simulation to your real roles.

We pause to ask:

  • What did I do as a leader, and what happened because of it
  • How did we communicate under pressure
  • Who spoke up, who held back, and why
  • What would I do differently back in my own team

By the end of day two, you have not only learned about effective leadership, you have felt it and tested it, with space to reflect on how you want to show up at work.

One-day Leadership Essentials workshop

The one-day version is a focused, high-impact introduction to leadership.

Across the day, we guide you through short inputs, discussions, and practical exercises that reflect real situations from your organisation.

You will:

  • Build a clear picture of your leadership role and responsibilities
  • Practise setting expectations and holding people to them
  • Try out tools for giving feedback and handling pushback
  • Explore your own default leadership style and how it lands with others
  • Leave with a simple personal action plan you can use straight away

The one-day format works well when time is tight, when you want to give new leaders a shared foundation, or when you are building a wider programme and need a strong first step.

How we run it

We can run Leadership Essentials on-site at your organisation, at Westlakes or an external venue convenient to you.

Group sizes are typically 8 to 16 people, large enough for lively discussion, small enough for individual attention.

Every workshop is tailored to your context, using your language, your challenges, and your examples, so that the content feels relevant from the first minute.

If you would like to explore whether the one-day or two-day plus simulation version is the best fit for your new and emerging leaders, we are happy to talk through your objectives and shape a programme around them.
